What Costco Won't Price Adjust: Exclusions, Rejections and How to Avoid Them
By Ankur Khurana, founder of ShelfVerse 路 Last updated November 4, 2026
Quick answer. Costco's published policy excludes precious metals, other retailers' prices, warehouse prices for Costco.com orders, items that didn't drop within 30 days of purchase, and quantities above a promotional limit. Costco can also deny any request at its sole discretion. Categories like gas, alcohol or tobacco aren't listed either way, so ask at the desk.
ShelfVerse is an independent Costco companion app and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Costco Wholesale. This guide summarizes Costco's published rules and, where marked, widely reported but unofficial shopper experience. Costco can change its policy or decline a request at its discretion; check with Costco before you rely on it.
Most price adjustment advice tells you how to get one. This guide is the other half: where Costco says no, where shopper reports get shaky, and how to keep a request from being declined. Everything marked official comes from Costco's own Costco.com price match policy page.
What Costco's policy says is not eligible
These are the exclusions Costco states in writing:
Precious metals. Costco's page says precious metals are not eligible for a price match or any promotions.
Other retailers' prices. It is an adjustment of Costco's own price, not a competitor price match. If Amazon is cheaper, that's not a basis.
Warehouse prices for Costco.com purchases. Costco says it does not match warehouse prices for online orders, because online prices include shipping and handling. See our online price adjustment guide.
Drops outside the window. The item must drop in price within 30 days of the purchase date. For dated promotions, requests must also be made within the promotion's dates, and later ones may be denied.
Quantities above a promotional limit. If the deal is limited per member, you're eligible only up to the limit.
Resellers outside promotional rules. Eligibility is limited to non-reseller members or products, and resellers have to buy within valid promotional dates.
Anything Costco declines. Costco says it can deny any request at its sole discretion.
Common rejections, and what's behind them
Rejection
Likely reason
What to try
"Past 30 days"
Window counted from purchase date, not from when you noticed
Ask early; check dates on the receipt
"Not our price"
You cited another retailer or a different channel
Point to Costco's own current price in the same channel
"Already got the sale price"
The promotion was applied at checkout
Check the receipt first; nothing to claim
"Not at this warehouse"
The sale price is at another warehouse, or you're at a different one than where you bought
Go to the warehouse of purchase
"Limit reached"
You bought more than the promo limit
Ask for the allowed quantity
"Not eligible item"
Excluded category, e.g. precious metals
Accept it, or ask what applies
Gray areas: what we could not verify
Search results are full of confident claims about what Costco does or doesn't adjust. Many are repeated without a source. Here is where we draw the line:
Gas. Costco's policy doesn't mention fuel. Not documented either way, so ask if it matters.
Alcohol and tobacco. Not mentioned in the policy. Laws and Costco's practices vary by state or province, so we won't make a blanket claim. Ask at the warehouse.
Items already on sale or clearance. The policy says nothing specific about markdowns. A further markdown on something you bought earlier at the regular price within 30 days is the classic case for asking, but Costco doesn't say how it treats it, so it depends on the desk. See our price tag codes guide.
Limit of one adjustment per item. Some blogs say this; Costco's page doesn't. If you're asking a second time on the same item, expect a conversation.
Adjustments after 30 days. Some members report goodwill from staff past the window, others report a strict no. It's discretionary, so don't plan around it.
Other warehouses' prices. Costco's page says warehouse purchases go to the warehouse where you bought them. A lower price elsewhere isn't addressed as a basis for adjustment, so ask the desk.
The theme: where Costco hasn't written it down, the answer is "ask at the desk", and the person you ask can say yes or no. That isn't evasion; it's how the policy works.
How to improve your odds of approval
Use the right channel. Warehouse purchases at the warehouse desk; online orders through the online form. See the complete guide.
Bring proof. Membership card, receipt (or purchase history on your phone), and the item number from the shelf tag or product page. A photo of the current price with the date helps.
Check the receipt first. Make sure the sale price wasn't already deducted, and that the new price is actually lower than what you paid after any earlier discounts.
Go early in the window. A request on day 5 is easier than on day 29, and nothing is lost if the price drops again.
Be specific and polite. "I bought this item number on the 3rd for $X; I see it's $Y now. Can I get a price adjustment?" gets a faster answer than a speech.
Confirm before you leave. Check the credited amount against the difference.
Don't stack asks. Group several items into one visit, and make sure each qualifies on its own.
If the answer is no
You can politely ask for the reason, check that you're in the right channel, and try again later if the price is still lower and you're still within 30 days. Costco's customer service is another route. If it's simply an excluded item or a case outside the window, the answer is final in most cases; save your effort for the next drop.
If the main problem is not noticing a drop in time, ShelfVerse (free, independent, not affiliated with Costco) watches your purchases, shows the days left and separates online from warehouse so you ask in the right place. Shopping in Canada? Read the Canada guide.
ShelfVerse checks your purchases against new prices, shows how many days are left in the 30-day window, and keeps online and warehouse separate so you ask in the right place. Free on iOS and Android.
What is not eligible for a Costco price adjustment?Per Costco.com's price match policy: precious metals, prices from other businesses or retailers, warehouse prices for Costco.com purchases, and any quantity beyond a promotion's limit. The item must also drop in price within 30 days of purchase.
Does Costco price adjust gas, alcohol or tobacco?Costco's published policy doesn't mention them either way, and we could not verify any rule. Rules on alcohol and tobacco vary by state or province, so ask at the warehouse.
Can Costco refuse a valid price adjustment?Yes. Costco says it can deny any request at its sole discretion and may restrict the policy in the future.
Why was my price adjustment denied after 30 days? The published window is 30 days from purchase. Some members report staff occasionally helping later, but that is discretionary and not something Costco promises.
Can I get a price adjustment at a different warehouse than where I bought it?Costco says warehouse purchases must be handled at the returns counter of the warehouse where the item was bought. A cheaper price at another warehouse isn't covered.
What should I do if Member Services says no?Stay polite, confirm the date and price you paid, and ask what the specific reason is. If it was a Costco.com order, use the online form instead of the warehouse. You can also contact Costco customer service.
